How to Train Your Chicken This piece was written based off of a chapter from Under the Henfluence, written by Tove Danovich. I chose this book to compose about because the subject matter really spoke to me. I love animals and their quirky natures and love creating compositions inspired by them. The book truly delivered. I learned so much about chickens that I never knew. My absolute favorite chapter was titled “How to Train Your Chicken.” The images I got from reading it inspired this quirky, sometimes chaotic swing piece. Trainers use a clicking device – represented by the percussion. The piece begins with some clucking and clicking and develops into chaos as several different people attempt to train their chickens for the first time. After several tries, the piece culminates in a less chaotic and more organized, joyful tune representing the mastery of training the chickens. After speaking with Tove, the author, I also wanted to capture more of the actual musical nature of the chicken that she writes about in the book. She mentions the Egg-Laying song that chickens actually sing (or cluck) when they are laying eggs. After listening to several different chicken’s egg songs, I incorporated my own version of it into the piece as well. This was a lot of fun to create. I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I enjoyed composing it. This was a commission from the Portland Jazz Composer's Ensemble for the collaborative project "Playing With Words."
