This piece was composed for an incredible violinist and friend, Nelly Kovalev.  After performing as concertmaster of one of my pieces – Odyssey Overture for Orchestra – Nelly approached me and said that we needed a piece for the two of us – violin and contrabassoon!  I couldn’t resist the challenge.  I tried to think of a topic that could possibly be portrayed by these 2 instruments and kept coming back to the image of the little birds that perch on the backs of rhinoceroses.  I imagined the two animals communicating with each other in a spirited conversation and this is what evolved from that train of thought. Not all classical music needs to be serious!  A fun and challenging piece that unites 2 instruments that hardly ever get to play together!
